Torsion Spring Arm (12/08/09) Early models of the mini mill, before around 2002 or so, used a compressed-air spring to offset the weight of the head. The air spring cylinder is mounted inside the hollow column and the piston moves in or out as the head is moved.
The gas spring is the same as for the tilting column. I had to cut down the head of the bolt for clearance. The Y axis screw is the same for either the solid column or the large table mill with the tilting column. If you have an HF mill, you will need the longer screw.
4/4/2014 Just completed installing an air spring on my HF mini mill. I used a method I had seen on a youtube video. Basically installing the air spring using the existing bolt used for attaching the torsion spring to the head and the left rear mounting bolt used to secure the mill to the bench.
10/1/2017 I have decided to buy the LMS 3990 mini mill. I plan to add the table feed and column spacer for added work height.
